I had a “moment”

I had a “moment” earlier…
I was listening to Misplaced Childhood by Marillion, it got to the bit:

My childhood, a misplaced childhood
Give it back to me, give it back to me
A childhood, that childhood
Oh please give it back to me.

I was looking at this model locomotive that had belonged to my childhood friend.
My friend who died suddenly, unexpectedly two months ago.

And yes, that’s a photograph of him and me, from sometime back in the 1980s.
The music continued:

So I see it’s me, I can do anything
And I’m still the child
‘Cos the only thing misplaced was direction
And I found direction
There is no childhood’s end
You are my childhood friend…

I’m not ashamed to say that tears welled-up in my eyes.
Why did he die? What’s the purpose? What sense is there in it?

I found no answer.
I cried.
Marillion played on.
